Over two-thirds of primary school teachers say government targets requiring seven year olds to know the alphabet are to demanding, according to the Sunday Times.

The newspaper claims that a confidential report reveals widespread opposition to targets approved last week by the national Curriculum council and due to come into force by 1996.

Advisers on the curriculum council have rejected the complaints, arguing that their key aim is precisely to raise expectations.
