The chair of Newham LBC's education committee, Graham Lane, has claimed that officials from the department for education and employment asked him to put forward new governors to help tip the balance of power against the incumbent head of a government flagship grant maintained school.

The Evening Standard reports that cllr Lane, who also chairs the Association of Metropolitan Authorities education committee, said he was asked by government officials last year to recommend a handful of people who might replace governors holding the balance of power in favour of headteacher Anne Snelling

'It was clear that there was general dissatisfaction with Anne Snelling. We were amazed that officials were demanding this. This was the woman who was made an OBE supposedly because of her success at the school. There was obvious concern that the school might still be failing despite the special measures implemented to turn it round.'

The Standard says that 'mystery surrounds the departure' of Anne Snelling, and Mr Lane's claims could be embarrassing to ministers. Mrs Snelling recently announced she is to take early retirement.
