Local authority leaders are to put the case to the government tomorrow for an extra £440m to meet care needs, according to the Association of Metropolitan Authorities.

Rita Stringfellow, chair of the AMA's social services committee, estimated that:

£226m extra is needed to meet additional costs of Care in the Community;

£74m for improved services for children;

£65m to meet needs of greater numbers of elderly people; and

£54m for the mentally ill and those with learning difficulties.

The request will be made at the Consultative Council on Local Government Finance.
