The Associations of Metropolitan Authorities and District Councils are organising a joint conference to discuss the cancer risk posed by equipment generating strong electromagnetic fields.

The conference, at St Thomas's Hospital in London on Monday November 14, will look at whether planning guidance is needed for developments near such fields - often caused by high voltage power lines.

AMA development committee chair Keith Billington said the issue was a very emotive subject which authorities were struggling to deal with because of a lack of knowledge on the issue and a lack of government guidance.

'Large scale research needs to be commissioned into this issue and interim planning guidance should be issued immediately,' Mr Billington said.
