The AMA has requested an urgent meeting with Housing Minister, Sir George Young, about his plans to withdraw funding from special needs housing schemes.
Sir George claims the scheme is an inappropriate use of housing corporation funds and is considering making a it council responsibility.
Tight council funding means that many special needs housing schemes would close, say the AMA, and a recent survey by the National Federation of housing suggests over 5000 bed spaces in 575 homes would be affected.
Margaret Moran, chair of the AMA's housing committee said: 'Authorities will do their best but more people are bound to end up tin the street. It is a perversion of what community care is supposed to be all about.'
