The AMA education conference laid the foundations of a national survey into locally managed schools today, to be completed for next year's conference.

Graham Lane, AMA's education chair said: 'Locally managed schools was pioneered by local education authorities. But there are widespread concerns about how the scheme as imposed on schools by the government is working in practice.

The conference also welcomed the government's U-turn today on non- graduate training for infant teachers. Graham Lane said: 'The Government's original concept was not acceptable to anyone connected with education. The AMA response emphasised the need for an alternative approach that was designed to make access to proper teacher training more readily available to people with parenting skills. We are delighted that the government has listened to these arguments.
