Councils have responded angrily to the Audit Commission's claims that good practices could save councils £500 million on their pay bills, reports The Birmingham Post (p3).

Birmingham City Council said it was in its third year of voluntary redundancies with hundreds to come this year.

Dudley MBC said it made £17.5m of cuts two years ago and faced £9m of cuts this year.

Hereford and Worcester CC said it was operating economically and had a low level of administrative costs.
