Police were called when Gloucestershire CC workers refused to pay new parking charges at their office car park, reports the Western Daily Press.

Council staff reporting for work were met by a security guard at the Castle Meads car park whose job was to keep them out unless they were prepared to pay£250 for the newly-introduced permits.

Some staff left their cars in the approach road, causing a traffic jam, and police were called.

Angry workers later staged a protest march through Gloucester town centre and also met with councillors.

Gloucestershire CC says it introduced the charges as part of its green transportation policy, encouraging people to use public transport instead of their car.

Unison spokesman Julian Powell said the council is 'being bloody-minded and appears to be trying to inflame the situation.'
