An announcement is expected on Thursday September 30 that the review into the structure of Local Government is to be speeded up.

LGCNet understands that an announcement is likely to come from Environment Minister John Gummer after a cabinet meeting on Thursday morning.

There is speculation that a target figure of possibly a population of 200,000 could be introduced for some unitary authorities. A view is also circulating in Whitehall circles that this will see the return of 'county borough status' in the form of unitary authorities at least in the larger member cities which are currently district authorities.
