The report* by the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) into PFI is another nail in the coffin of the private finance initiative, said Unison. The union urged the government to implement the motion carried at this year's Labour Party conference, and backed by the IPPR report, for an independent inquiry into PFI schemes.
Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, said:
'The IPPR report is another nail in the coffin of the discredited private finance initiative. We all want new schools and hospitals, but taxpayers shouldn't be made to pay through the nose for them. These schemes are very complex and cost millions. This is yet another in a long line of reports, that says PFI is not value for money. This money that should be going straight into patient care and into educating our children, not into lining the pockets of private companies.
'It is time for the government to carry out the wishes of this years' Labour Party conference and have a comprehensive, independent inquiry to establish once and for all if PFI gives taxpayers value for money.'
