The clampdown on housing benefit and student grant fraud is examined in an article in The Independent (Section Two p15).

By the beginning of next year, a computer database, extended from London, will contain names and addresses of claimants in 300 councils, including all large metropolitan areas.

The database will include a facility for 'fuzzy' matching to find false claims in which people use slightly altered identities.

Meanwhile, the Audit Commission is working on a good practice guide on claims verification based on work by Manchester City Councils and other leading authorities.
