The anti-rail privatisation Save Our Railways Campaign is appealing to councils to support its legal challenge against the rail franchise director which may halt rail privatisation before the next election.

Avon CC and Exeter City Council are among those who have so far offered financial support.

Save Our Railways co-ordinator Jonathan Bray said franchise director Roger Salmon had failed to produce criteria for cutbacks in services, as he is legally required to do.

'We've lodged papers for a judicial review of the first franchises which have so far been issued,' he said.
