The Association of Directors of Social Services have welcomed the appointment* of senior civil servant Tom Jeffery as the first director general for children and

families.

Mr Jeffery will be responsible for giving advice on children

and family policy to the secretary of state and ministers at the

Department for Education and Skills.

According to ADSS president Andrew Cozens, the association will be 'very pleased that somebody with the grasp of the children's, families and social care agenda that Tom Jeffery has acquired has been appointed to this crucial post.

'It is a positive demonstration of how central this agenda is in the

DfES,' he added.
