Littleborough and Saddleworth by-election winner Chris Davies has been appointed to join David Rendel on the Liberal Democrat's local government team.

Mr Davies will take particular responsibility for building closer links between Liberal Democrat council groups and the party's MPs.

He is a serving councillor at Oldham MBC and a former Liverpool City Council housing chair.

Party leader Paddy Ashdown said: 'Our commanding position as the largest party on more than 100 local authorities is an immense asset. I want to forge a closer partnership between our elected representatives at local and national level to promote the party's policies and develop its campaigns'
