Legislation to appoint a new Scottish public appointments commissioner has been endorsed by the Scottish Parliament's local government committee.

The Public Appointments and Public Bodies (Scotland) Bill proposes the abolition of six public bodies, including the Historic Buildings Council for Scotland.

Committee convenor Trish Godman MSP (Lab) said: 'We hope the new post will boost confidence in the public appointments process in Scotland.'

The committee called for greater parliamentary consultation on the commissioner's equal opportunities strategy and on the addition and removal of public bodies.

The bill is to be debated in Parliament later this month.
