Lord Archer, one of the possible candidates to become mayor of London, has joined the row over claims that London subsidises Scotland by claiming that it was his idea to cut Scotland's special funding arrangements.

The Scotsman (p4) reports that the novelist says it was he, not rival Trevor Phillips, who had first come up with the idea of taking money out of Scotland's coffers and bringing it back to the capital.
