Medway Council chief executive Judith Armitt has been named as the chief executive of the Thames Gateway by the communities and local government secretary Ruth Kelly.

Her appointment to the new post is seen as a response to criticism that the project has suffered from poor leadership. Earlier this year management consultancy Hornagold & Hills surveyed civil servants, councils and construction firms

involved in the project, the majority of whom said it was failing to effectively deliver it aims.

Ms Armitt take charge of the delivery of the programme, and the implementation of the strategic framework.

She said: 'I'll miss Medway but will be supporting the area through the Thames Gateway.'

Ms Armitt was previously director of finance and support services at Lewisham LBC.
