The Arts are to face a cut of £3.2 million or nearly 1.7% next year, Peter Brooke, secretary of state for national heritage announced last night, the Independent reports (p8).

Arts Council chairman Lord Palumbo said the announcement was a national disgrace. The full extent of the cuts will be announced later this month when the Arts Council announces how it will distribute the money.
