Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown, in a pre-local election rallying call to party activists, has called on candidates to concentrate their fire on council tax rises, reports The Herald (p4).

He has called on his members to tell voters: 'To pay for Tory tax bribes, everyone in Britain is paying with cuts to local services and paying with higher council tax bills in their letter boxes.'

Mr Ashdown said that with 5,000 councillors, and control of four times as many authorities as the Tories, the Liberal Democrats were going into the 2 May local elections stronger than ever before, and they should use it as a 'launch pad' for the general election.
