Ashford BC chief executive Alan Baker has died after a long illness.

Mr Baker, 48, had been chief executive at the council since February 1998 after moving from his position of chief financial officer with Aylesbury Vale DC.

The father of three died in hospital on Thursday after being treated for cancer for the past six months.

The CIPFA-qualified accountant oversaw the council's transition from the old committee system to the new leader and cabinet style of local government.

Personal interests included gardening, swimming and cooking. He played an active part in fundraising for Diabetes UK because his son is diabetic.

The funeral service was due to be held today at 2.40pm at Charing Crematorium, Charing. Donations, instead of flowers, should be made to the Pilgrim's Hospice at Ashford, phone 01233 504100.
