Council concern at the growth in poverty has prompted the local authority associations to join forces in setting up a new anti-poverty initiative.

The unit will develop the work of Anti-Poverty Action, set up by the Association of Metropolitan Authorities in 1986, in providing councils with research and policy back- up and developing links with European initiatives to combat social exclusion.

A joint association statement said the wider support for the new group was a reflection of 'local government's concern about the growth of poverty and its impact on individuals, communities and services'.
