Further delays to the high speed Channel Tunnel link could cause long term harm to the economy, today warned the Inter Association Channel Tunnel Initiative - a group of eight UK local authority associations.

Chairman of the group, Derek Bateman, has written to Transport Secretary, John MacGregor telling him: 'We are aware of the speculation about the implications for the funding of the link in the current expenditure round.

But he warned: 'Any delay would result in serious capacity problems in the relevant sector of Network South East, with potentially damaging implications for the regional economy'.
