Jack Straw, the home secretary, yesterday listed a series of concessions aimed at mollifying Labour MPs opposed to the Immigration and Asylum Bill, reports The Guardian (p13).

After speaking before more than 100 members of the parliamentary Labour Party, Mr Straw promised to increase the cash allowance to each adult and child to£10.

He also promised that families with children will have their applications speeded up; they presently take less than four months.

Another concession was an extra£120m to be spent on more staff to process the applications.
