The government's programme for central support of 'in-country' asylum seekers will begin in London on 24 July.

Refugees in the capital who made asylum applications after arriving in the UK will be supported by the Home Office rather than the London boroughs from that date.

The scheme will extend to the north-east, Yorkshire and Humberside and Wales a week later and to the north-west, the East Midlands, and east, south-west and south central England from 14 August. Two weeks later the scheme will be extended to the West Midlands and Sussex, then the remaining areas in England from 25 September.

The new funding arrangements will apply only to new cases.
