Atkins has been appointed to undertake a key programme management role for the West Midlands Regional Development Agency, Advantage West Midlands (AWM).

Under a nine-month secondment arrangement, Atkins will deliver the agency's£11m programme of grant aid to alleviate the economic after-effects of the foot & mouth outbreak among non-agricultural businesses in the region.

The programme management contract for Advantage West Midlands will see the provision of grant aid to support SMEs and those in the tourism industry who are still recovering from the effects of foot & mouth. Atkins will be involved in managing the budget, appraising projects, preparing the programme for audit, monitoring and evaluation, marketing and promotion of the region and preparation of the final report.

This is the most recent in a series of projects undertaken by Atkins on behalf of AWM in the fields of transport and cost management.

Atkins latest success underlines the determination of its Economic Development Team to develop a special working relationship with Regional Development Agencies (RDAs).

Consultant, James Hassett, who is leading the project for Atkins in the UK says: 'We are very excited about the opportunities this part-time secondment offers. There are nine RDAs nationally and we recognise them as hugely important clients for the future, both for the economic development team, and for Atkins as a whole. We intend to build upon the many successful relationships already established by the group with RDAs.'
