The Attorney General has ordered an investigation into leaflets distributed by the Liberal Democrats in the Millwall council by election in Tower Hamlets last September, the Times reports (p1 December 18).

The inquiry, also featured in most of Saturday's other papers sees the Attorney General, Sir Nicholas Lyell, asking the Metropolitan Police to investigate whether the leaflets represent an incitement to racial hatred.

The Times also says that after an inquiry into alleged racism at the LibDem branch three members have been expelled with disciplinary action due against others. And the party is reported as refusing to confirm that five of its Tower Hamlets councillors have resigned in protest and may form a breakway group. Next year the Liberal Democrats will have to defend the 29 seats they hold, Labour has 20 and the BNP one.
