The district auditor has asked to review evidence Derwentside DC used to sack two employees it accused of viewing internet pornography on council computers.

The auditor has asked the council to give full access to the evidence they used to dismiss tax chief Adrian Flanagan and finance manager Ian Parr, reported The Journal (13 Jan, p2).

Alan Hodgson, director of human resources and technology, said he welcomed the investigation. 'We have nothing to hide. We are satisfied the information we have gathered is watertight.'

A spokesman for the Audit Commission said: 'The auditor looks at all aspects of the council's information technology system and the probity of its behaviour.'

If the auditor backs up the council's findings it could bill the dismissed employees for the time they allegedly spent on the internet.

One of the two men is to appeal against the sacking. Both of them have the backing of Unison which questioned the information used to proceed with the sacking.
