The Local Government Commission is set to review the whole of Sefton MBC, not just Southport.

The borough is due to be reviewed this autumn. In a letter to the council, the DoE said the review would need to cover all of Sefton because any change in Southport's status would affect the rest of the borough.

Under the Local Government Act 1992, structural change is limited to a change from two to one tier. The DoE believes this will stop Southport becoming part of a two-tier Lancashire rather than a unitary.
