A new threat to playwright Alan Ayckbourn's theatre in Scarborough has emerged, with the news that North Yorkshire CC is facing a financial crisis so severe that it may have to choose between education or subsiding the arts, the Yorkshire Post reports (p1).

The council's£78,000 grant to the Stephen Joseph Theatre is part of a£230m arts support package which may have to be scrapped as the council decides where to cut.

But Scarborough borough councillor Michael Pitts said yesterday that he regarded North Yorkshire as legally bound to pay its share of the tripartite agreement between the two authorities and Yorkshire and Humberside Arts, which underpinned national lottery support for the theatre.

He also warned that if North Yorkshire withdrew its funding, Scarborough could reconsider its grant, which was increased last week.
