Scarborough Council has voted 35-9 to give an additional£50,000 funding to Alan Ayckbourn's theatre, after a political row dubbed 'luvvies versus lavvies', the Guardian reports (p8).

The Labour-controlled council agreed the cash, the first tranche of£250,000 over five years, after a Conservative members dubbed it 'a grant too far'.

The local Evening News had carried critical letters about the new Stephen Joseph Theatre, contrasting its funding bid with£566,000 cuts which threaten 20 toilets in the town. But Scarborough's Labour mayor, Mavis Don, said: 'The extra money is an investment which the town cannot afford to miss'.
