Bedfordshire CC this week awarded the Babtie Group a five-year contract to manage the county's highway consultancy work after voluntary competitive tendering.

The deal, worth up to£2 million a year, starts in October and sees 64 staff from Bedfordshire's highway consultancy services division transfer to the firm. Babtie plans to set up a new office in Bedford and will undertake road and bridge design as well as traffic control.

Mike Kenworthy, Bedfordshire's environment and economic development director, said: 'Our employees who will transfer to the Babtie Group can look forward to a secure future and I believe road users in Bedfordshire will continue to benefit from excellent services as a result.'

Bob Clarke, Babtie's managing director for public service contracts, said: 'This contract is based on partnership principles as set out by the government in its thinking on best value.'
