More than a thousand secondary schools need to close over the next four years, according to Sir John Banham, former controller of the Audit Commission and currently chairman of the Local Government Commission, the Times Education Supplement reports (page 2).

In a book published this month, The Anatomy of Change, he says the government's decision to allow schools to opt out has made it more difficult for local education authorities to close redundant schools. The rate of closure needs to double, he says, in order to plough savings back into schools.
