Anti-grammar school activists have suspended their campaign to end selection at three Barnet LBC schools, reports The Evening Standard.

Barnet Parents, the campaign group set up to force a ballot on the future of the three secondary schools have given up hope of collecting a petition by the 31 Jult deadline.

They need signatures from 6,000 parents, 20% of those eligible to vote in a subsequent ballot, according to the rules governing decisions over grammar schools.

The Barnet campaigners were the first in the country to register to hold a petition, following the introduction of new legislation which allows parents to ballot on the future of selective schools in their area.

Margaret Tullock, secretary of the Campaign for State Education, which is co-ordinating the national campaign under the 'say no to selection' banner, said: 'They found it would be a very big operation and they would need to collect an awful lot of signatures before 31 July to force a ballot.'
