Barnsley MBC is threatening legal action against the Department of Education and Employment over its decision to withdraw nursery voucher funding of£24,000, reports the Yorkshire Post (p10).

The department suddenly changed the rules, meaning some four year olds will not qualify for nursery vouchers even though the council has promised them a place.

Council education committee chairman David Foster said the decision was ludicrous and only revealed to the council in a note at the bottom of a newsletter.

The council is seeking advice on whether it is able to take legal action to challenge the policy change.
