A new chair will lead the employers' side of the fire negotiations, after pay talks broke down amid disarray within the Local Government Association.

Liz Barron (Lib Dem), who has served on Hampshire Fire Authority for almost 20 years, will replace Christina Jebb (Lib Dem). Ms Jebb was forced to stand down after pressing ahead with a negotiating position senior councillors said had not been agreed by the LGA (LGC, 13 August).

Ms Barron, whose appointment will be confirmed at next week's joint council for fire services meeting, said stand-down time and bank holiday working remained the major sticking points in negotiations with the Fire Brigades Union.
