The Financial Times (January 11, p4) ran a story on the preparations for the 40th anniversary of The Cavern Club, where the Beatles began their career.

The paper pointed out that tourism has come from nowhere to be Liverpool's ninth largest employer, visitor spending has increased by almost 45 per cent since 1990 to£483m in 1995.

Chris Farrow, chief executive of the Merseyside Development Corporation said that the industry's success has exceeded expectations, and about a third of visitors who spent a night in Merseyside in 1995 said they had come to Liverpool because of the Beatles.
