Bedford BC Labour leader Mike Cotter has announced today that he is standing down in the light of a police investigation into allegations of corruption within the authority, reports BBC Three Counties.

The council's Labour group met last night and, in a statement issued through the Ipswich regional office of the Labour party, Mr Cotter says he wants to avoid the investigation affecting the activities of the Labour group. Deputy leader Shan Hunt becomes acting leader of the group until inquiries are completed.

Mr Cotter is at the heart of an investigation which centres on a leaked letter from a firm of consultants employed by the council. It appears to offer him 2.5% of the value of a £100,000 contract if he gets the authority to sign it. Mr Cotter denies any wrong-doing.

Three officers of the council have been suspended. The latest was suspended yesterday.
