A radio network linking town centre shops in Bedford is being launched today in an effort to reduce crime, reports BBC Three Counties.

The open channel radio network will link the stores to each other and to local police to circulate a warning when thieves are spotted. The Radio Retail Scheme was the idea of Bedford Town Centre Forum which brings together representatives of traders, police and Bedford BC.

Closed circuit television cameras around the town have substantially reduced crime on the streets, but not inside the shops where the cameras do not operate. The radio link will be connected to the main town centre police station and to the CCTV control room.
