Environment secretary John Gummer has told Bedfordshire CC that it must build 2,100 more new homes than it plans to by 2011.

This, reported the Daily Telegraph (October 19, p11) is the third time that Mr Gummer has intervened to force a council to accept more houses than it was proposing and it is a decision which will have implications throughout the country.

Pressure is likely to increase, said the paper, on many other authorities including West Sussex, Dorset, Wiltshire, Devon, Cheshire and Hampshire CCs that propose to build fewer new homes than government regional planning guidance recommends.
