Bedfordshire CC's Labour group has bowed to national party pressure and agreed to put together a budget.

Labour councillors had voted two weeks ago to boycott the budget-setting process in protest at government cuts.

But regional officials declared the vote null and void, and decided to reconstitute the Labour group at a meeting chaired by a regional official last Thursday (LGC, 9 February).

Before being admitted to the meeting, members of the 31- strong group had to sign a declaration accepting party rules, or face expulsion.

A recorded vote on whether to put forward a budget was carried with 15 members in favour, but a rebel group of 15 abstained.
