Graham Chapman, leader of Nottingham City Council, wrote to The Sunday Telegraph (p40) setting out the authority's policy of serving British beef in its establishments.

He said: 'It is not correct to say that Nottingham City Council is continuing with the British beef ban in its schools. We are writing to all schools asking whether they wish British beef back on the menu.

'Should we wish to do so, then we will be only too happy to supply it.

My personal view is that British beef is probably safer than most other types of beef given all the safety measures that are being put in place.'
