Councils in West Sussex and the Isle of Wight which recently had to cope with severe weather conditions have been given the go ahead to apply for cash under the Bellwin scheme.

Exceptional rainfall at Christmas caused severe flooding in West Sussex and landslips on the Isle of Wight. The councils will be able to claim 85% of eligible costs above their thresholds.

These are the 10th and 11th times the scheme, which aims to provide financial help to councils after emergencies, has been triggered since it was introduced in 1983.
