Savings totalling £400m have been made to date from compulsory competitive tendering of local authority services, environment minister Paul Beresford, claimed yesterday in the Commons (OA 21 Nov col 444).

Bur Labour MP for Denton & Reddish, Andrew Bennett, wanted to know how much that saving cost central government as a result of people taking home lower wages and thus qualifying for housing benefit and family credit.

'The almost parasitic drawing of some direct labour organisations on the local economy has been offset,' replied Sir Paul.
