Officers of Berkshire CC have been given the green light to resume joint working with their district council colleagues to prepare for the introduction in April 1998 of the county's new unitary authorities.

The county's local government review committee agreed yesterday that chief officers should be responsible immediately for the provision of service information, ensuring that 'a level playing field is created for all districts with an agreed programme of information.'

The moves follows Tuesday's decision in the House of Lords to approve the government's plans for six unitary authorities in Berkshire. Joint working with districts - on matters relating to local government review only - was halted last October.
