Berwick-upon-Tweed BC is considering an application for early retirement from its chief executive, according to The Journal (14/2/00).

Edward Cawthorn has held the post for eight years. He has been with the council for 26 years.

The Journal also reports last month's vote of no confidence in senior management at the authority by Unison members (see LGCnet 26/1/00 'BERWICK OVERSPEND LEADS TO VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE BY STAFF').

Meanwhile the town hall branch of Unison has issued the following

statement:

'Unison are satisfied that it would now appear there will be no complusory redundancies or short-time working arrangements in order to achieve a balanced budget for this coming financial year.

'It is also encouraging that councillors and all staff are now working more closely together in order to achieve short-term and long-term security for the council and its services.'
