Ipswich BC has stepped up its joint working with police after several prostitutes were murdered in the town.

The police are using the council's headquarters as a base for CCTV monitoring and are borrowing its public relations team to send out safety warnings.

People are being encouraged only to go out in groups and mobile CCTV is in use, including in the red light district.

Council staff are warning sex workers to stay away from the area and those working to fund drug habits are being supported to find an alternative.

Chief executive James Hehir told LGC the council had increased measures to ensure that all citizens were safe.

'The town centre is a lot safer than the red light area but we do not want complacency among the rest of society that this will only happen to prostitutes, and therefore we are making sure Ipswich is well policed,' he said.
