Recycling in flats

Barnet LBC is urging residents living in flats to join the recycling revolution after a grant from the Waste and Resources Action Programme allowed it to commission teams of recycling promoters from national charity Waste Watch. Around 15,000 households with communal recycling bins will be visited during the three month campaign and residents given a reusable bag to store recyclable items and an information leaflet.

Inspecting housing

Enfield LBC residents have formed a volunteer force to check the condition of council estates. The Shires Estate near the North Circular and Curtis House on the Ladderswood Way estate were the first to be checked over. Inspectors are signed-up to make an unexpected visit once a month and will be rewarded with£20 in high street gift vouchers.

Portsmouth City Council's trading standards team has named and shamed stores selling knives illegally after test-purchase operations. A 14-

year-old volunteer managed to buy a craft knife, a set of six knives and a kitchen knife from three shops while visiting seventeen retailers. One retailer, ASDA, has been suspended from the council's fair trading scheme, pending written assurance that procedures are in place to prevent a reoccurrence.

Engaging teenagers

Young people from Wharton and Winsford have taken place in a DJ training taster session run by professional DJ team Turn the Tables. The session

was organised by the fire and rescue service to engage

with older teenagers attending games area sessions set up by Vale Royal BC at Willow Wood Community Centre, Wharton. A 10-week course teaching the arts of DJ'ing, MC'ing and music production is due to be run early in 2007.

Planning move

The timetable for the rollout of a standard planning application form for use across all English planning authorities has been announced. From October 2007, the 1APP form will become the only official method of submitting an application for most types of consent for all local planning authorities in England. Its implementation will be phased between February and September 2007. At present each authority produces its own forms.

Stockport MBC has awarded food safety, healthy eating and fair trading awards to 49 local businesses. Those awarded include takeaways, restaurants, pubs, schools, nurseries, health centres, colleges and garages.
