Council housing departments will spend 20% more a year on information technology in the run up to competitive tendering, according to the latest market research.

A survey of 100 housing managers, by independent researchers Kable, found an extra £20 million a year would be spent on IT over the next three years, to cope with competition and reorganisation.

The report, Information systems in housing management 1994-95, confirms the low level of investment in housing IT. With around 20% of councils' budgets housing related, only 10% of total spending on IT goes on housing management.

Housing managers said they wanted an independent body to accredit the software.
