Police authorities would become divorced from local government and turned into government quangos if the Police and Magistrates Courts Bill, is not changed before reaching the Statute Book, said the ACC and AMA today who represent all 43 police authorities in England and Wales.

The two assocaitions intend to lobby hard to amend clauses in the Bill and therefore, they say, sustain local government's role as a check on police or state directing the police.
