A climbdown from original Labour proposals over members' allowances has been agreed by Birmingham City Council.

The Birmingham Post reports (p3) a full council meeting last night voted to increase the basic annual allowance from £950 to £4,475 - and to £7,980 in 1997 after a rise to £6,230 from this October.

At the same time attendance allowances are to be scrapped next year after being chopped to £15 now and £7.50 this October, the paper reports.

Original proposals were to increase the lump sum taxable payment for members to £6,000 as well as retaining attendance allowances.
